What is the La Sierra Fitness Program?

At Grassroots Fitness Project, we take inspiration from tried and true exercise routines to incorporate into our group fitness class, personal training, & even our kid’s semester programming! One of those routines is called the La Sierra fitness program.

History: What is the La Sierra?

The La Sierra is a physical literacy program created in 1957 by an inspired gym coach, named Stan LeProtti. The program was adopted by La Sierra High School in Carmichael, California. The high school gained notoriety for the program, which caught President John F Kennedy’s attention, where he wanted to spread it to all high schools in the US. JFK was a huge advocate of physical fitness and wellness in the school systems.

Grassroots Adopted Use:

GRFP Co-founder, Wil Rivera, like JFK, is also a huge advocate for youth fitness and therefore, in 2020 when the pandemic hit, took it upon himself to do the La Sierra every single day for over 200 days and invited his Teen Strength class to do it with him. Many of the boys video-documented their journey and it turned into a fun way to instill a bit of community, accountability, and movement while in lockdown.

To this day. GRFP incorporates the warm up into our Tween/Teen Strength classes, private training, and even Adult classes from time to time. It is structured to be an effective warm up or light workout that you can do anywhere, from the gym to the park or in your own home! Try it out below. While you’re at it, sign up for one of our classes!
