The Grassroots Fitness approach to properly training children is by challenging the child’s balance, coordination, strength and flexibility in a manner that creates success for each individual. In this specific prepubescent period of the child, focus will be placed on strength, energy system training and dynamic flexibility. Static flexibility training is introduced later during the onset of puberty (12 years of age), at which point flexibility will slowly start to decline. Programs can be tailored to a specific sport but only after the basic movement patterns have been learned and demonstrated properly.

The Grassroots Fitness Project utilizes a training method known as “Functional Training.” The guiding idea behind Functional Training is to work the body as an interdependent whole. This represents a departure from the ideas underlying traditional bodybuilding, which seek to separate the body into its principal parts–for example, chest, biceps, or quadriceps. As opposed to training individual muscles, Functional Training focuses on executing movement patterns that strengthen weaker muscles along their length while simultaneously stretching tighter muscles. Functional training movements demand a high degree of motor coordination and what we call “maximum postural stabilizer recruitment.” Grassroots Fitness Project uses this training regimen when working with children and adults of all ages, to bring about measurable gains in flexibility, strength, endurance and overall performance.

  • 60 minute functional training sessions are the best option for anyone starting out, dealing with injuries, and or looking to build an athletic base while working on specific needs and wants.
